Lt.-Gen. Ion Pacepa, deputy chief of Romanian foreign
intelligence DIE and the highest-ranking defector from the Soviet
bloc.
Initially Pacepa was treated by CIA debriefers with disbelief and was debriefed on a full-time basis for three years. The revelations which followed the collapse of the Ceausescu regime proved how credible and accurate Pacepa was. After his defection in 1978, Pacepa had been convicted in absentia and sentenced to death. On 7 June 1999, Ion Pacepa, was acquitted of treason by Romania's highest court. |
