In 1955, Monat was sent to the Polish Embassy in Washington as a military attaché with the KGB assignment of spying
upon U.S. military installations. While in the U.S., Monat was impressed with the freedom enjoyed by U.S. citizens, the free press,
and the freedom of speech.
Though he continued his espionage in New York where he controlled pickups and drops from other agents in the New York Public Library, Monat resolved to defect to the West. After returning to Warsaw in 1958, he wangled a visit to Vienna in the following year. At that time he went to the American Embassy, asking for asylum. Pawel Monat was taken to the U.S. and was then given a new identity. |
