The American Woman in the Spanish Civil War - Participants in Spain's Fight for Freedom.

Julia Newman brings to life the stories of the eight American woman in the Spanish Civil War, who went to help Spain's new democracy defend itself against a fascist invasion.

Among these woman were medical professionals, an ambulance driver, social workers, writers, and journalists.

Although their hearts were wonder when the war was lost, their spirits were never broken.

They continued to fight for freedom wherever the battle took them: World War II, the Civil Rights Movement, peace marches, and hunger strikes.

And some of them lived to see Spain become a democracy again - a living monument to faith in the human spirit and their dedication to the cause of freedom.
